Once they matched steps, and bullets, with men. Now, they fight shoulder to shoulder with each other. Danteshwari Fighters – the first all-woman anti-Maoist commando unit in Bastar – has transformed from an experiment to a potent weapon.
Blooded in combat, two of the women commandos have been awarded out-of-turn promotions for killing two Maoists in a gunfight. Starting out as a unit of 16, the Danteshwari ‘Ladake’ are now 97-strong. All of them volunteers. All of them willing to take a bullet to save a comrade in uniform or to protect their people. Last year, they celebrated Women’s Day by demolishing a ‘memory pillar’ of a woman Maoist who was killed in an encounter. The insurgents had forced villagers to build the pillar in Jabeli village of Dantewada district, and the Danteshwari commandos pounded it to rubble.
