A Sri Lankan Cricket (SLC) official has dismissed speculations that Wanindu Hasaranga retired from Test cricket to avoid a ban for some matches of the T20 World Cup 2024. He was then selected for the 2-match Test series against Bangladesh. On March 19, the International Cricket Council (ICC) banned Hasaranga for the two-Test series against Bangladesh.
Before this decision of ICC, Hasaranga, who retired in August last year, was selected in the team for two Test matches against Bangladesh. If Hasaranga had not been banned for two Tests, he would have been accused of violating Article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct. Because of this he is unable to play four ODIs or T20s. He received this punishment for expressing his unhappiness over the umpire’s decision during the third ODI against Bangladesh. T20 World Cup 2024 will be played hosted by America and West Indies from June 1.
Team manager Mahinda Halangoda said, “Actually the information is wrong that he was deliberately selected to avoid the ban of matches in the T20 World Cup. Hasaranga had given us a letter long ago and the selectors took it into consideration and he was not included in the Test series.” “It has nothing to do with that incident.”
