Vandana Dwivedi, a 26-year-old software engineer with a prominent IT company, was found murdered Sunday with two gunshot wounds to the head and one each in the abdomen and chest in a hotel room near Laxmi Chowk in the Pune suburb of Hinjewadi, police said.
Vandana, a Lucknow native who moved to Pune after she joined the IT firm, was murdered around 9.50pm Saturday, said a police officer.
The murder was discovered after Navi Mumbai police arrested Rishabh Nigam, 27, Sunday morning. He was rounded up based on information from an informant that a man suspected of a shooting in Pune was planning to travel to UP.
During questioning, the man revealed that he had shot his friend in a hotel room. He told us that he was in a relationship with her the past 12 years,” Navi Mumbai senior inspector Abasaheb Patil said.
However, police and hotel management representatives confirmed that none of the hotel employees, guests, and people from the neighbourhood heard gunshots. “Around the same time, loud celebrations by people associated with the Maratha quota agitation were taking place on the streets ,” the hotel manager said.
